Series #VeronesiTuttiMathSeminars #SafetyThenEnjoyMath
The amount of available data is exponentially growing, and data-driven decisions are recognised as the best possible ones to make. For this reason, everyone - from the single person to the big company - is tempted to utilise this enormous (often, very cheap) resource to guide their actions. As we know from our daily experience, organising the data in order to identify the best decision is not so simple because most of the available information, although related to our decision goal, is not relevant to it. In this scenario, where a little relevant knowledge is hidden within an ocean of data, a new scientific field arose: Data Science - according to Wikipedia, an interdisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from noisy, structured and unstructured data. Due to the increasing popularity of this discipline, in this talk we want first to describe the fun of working in this field and then explain why a math background is necessary. In particular, starting from a fundamental model as the Principal Component Analysis, we will show that theoretical concepts, like topology, differential geometry, linear algebra, are actually essential to understanding and solving real-case problems.
