First lecture in Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations

First lecture in Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Dear students,

the first lecture in Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations #NumMethPDEs (Prof. Albi & Caliari) will be on March 9, at 12:30 in room G.

During the course, we will see how the Finite Element and Finite Volumes methods can be employed to numerically solve partial differential equations (such as advection-diffusion-reaction equations, both steady and evolutionary, p-Laplace equation, Burgers equation, conservation laws in general). The analysis and usage of these techniques will be a good moment for a review of standard techniques of functional analysis, linear algebra, computational geometry, and numerical analysis (solution of linear and nonlinear systems, quadrature, approximation). We will use two widely spread open source tools such as FreeFem++ and CLawPack. Of course, a little bit of Matlab language will be used for the introductory examples.

Strictly connected to the course is the mini-course of Numerical aspects of high-performance and scientific computing by Prof. Lukas Einkemmer, University of Innsbruck. It will be possible to develop joint projects as part of the final examinations. I recall that Innsbruck is an Erasmus partner and Prof. Einkemmer will be glad to host students for their Master's thesis.

Any further communication will be given on the e-learning page https://moodledidattica.univr.it/course/view.php?id=10927, to which you are invited to subscribe.

Giacomo Albi and Marco Caliari
