Mathematical Modeling of Neural Tissue Descriptors from Magnetic Resonance Data

Relatore:  Alonso Ramirez-Manzanares - Centro de Investigación en Matemáticas A.C. (CIMAT)
  giovedì 4 giugno 2026 alle ore 10.30 Room H

In this course, we introduce the basic physical concepts underlying the contrast observed in Magnetic Resonance Images (MRIs) of the brain. More interestingly, we extend this modeling to include and characterize water molecular displacement within and outside the neuron (intra- and extracellular hydrogen diffusion) and demonstrate how this can be used to detect changes/damages in neural tissues, with applications in medical diagnosis. The student will learn about computational tools used in clinical/research environments to generate biophysical-parameter maps of the brain from MRIs that correlate with neural tissue properties, such as neural density and the average orientation of neural connections.
