In this talk I will outline some aspects of the correspondence between algebraic groups and their Lie algebras when the base field is of characteristic zero. Then I will show how it can be used to tackle some algorithmic problems for algebraic groups such as deciding membership and determining the smallest algebraic group containing a given set of matrices.
