Topics in Infectious Disease Modeling and Surveillance

Abstract: Although over two years have passed since the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, the full extent of both the disease itself and its associated disruptions are still being understood. As we move forward, it is important to understand the implications of COVID-19 not only for the disease itself, but also how the epidemic has both directly and indirectly changed the landscape of other important public health challenges. This talk will cover several topics in this area, including the modeling of nonlocal spatiotemporal processes in epidemics and issues concerning disruptions the HIV continuum-of-care in the United States due to COVID-19 related issues.

Short Bio: Alex Viguerie obtained his PhD in Applied Mathematics at Emory University in 2018. Upon completion of his doctorate, Alex then joined the Computational Mechanics and Advanced Materials Group at the University of Pavia, Italy. In 2020, Alex was the winner of the competitive research fellowship at the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI), L'Aquila, Italy. Alex's research is at the intersection of engineering, numerical analysis, and mathematical modeling, with a particular focus in medical and life sciences applications. Specifically, Alex has worked extensively on problems in cardiology, nephrology, additive manufacturing, spatiotemporal modeling of infectious disease, and the development of mathematical models and numerical methods to address such problems. Alex currently works as a research scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, in the National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP).
