People develop skill and even expertise in using their
digital devices. There is actually a world championship in writing text
messages on mobile phones! But do these devices use and challenge our
senses to their full extent? SonicTexting is a system for entering text
- "texting" - using gestures and sound. I will present the research and
the design process that led to SonicTexting, as well as other projects
exploring the synchronous connection between hands, ears and tasks.
These projects will be a basis for discussing: what are the qualities
of audio-tactile interaction? Can, and should, functional interactions
be situated on the border between task, musical instrument and game?
