In recent years multimedia traffic has dramatically increased especially on mobile devices. At the same time, new protocols for multimedia communications have been standardized, such as MPEG DASH, which are currently being deployed by large service providers.
After a brief introduction about multimedia coding and protocols, focused in particular on the case of video, the real-time multimedia communication problem will be formulated and a set of solutions will be presented for the specific case of live scalable video streaming to a multitude of users through cheap stateless servers.  Achievable performance, advantages and drawbacks will be discussed.  Finally, an outlook about the trends in the field will be given by showing some results of the analysis of the Periscope application which provides a mobile live streaming service.
