La sintesi interattiva del suono richiede, oltre alle più tradizionali competenze di elaborazione del suono digitale, peculiari conoscenze di design dell'interazione uomo-macchina e di progettazione di interfacce non visuali, anche multimodali, su diverse piattaforme tecnologiche. Scopo della sintesi di audio interattivo è quello di produrre suoni all'interno di contesti d'interazione continua, applicabili a molteplici scenari che spaziano dall'ecologia dell'esperienza quotidiana ad applicazioni musicali, in cui il livello di realismo dell'interazione gioca un ruolo determinante.
