Learning outcomes

The goal of this course is to give the students a basis in the application of mathematical structures and computational models to describe and discuss phenomena occurring in nature. DNA, Membrane, and Light based algorithms, together to some traditional models, are proposed along with case studies to describe biological processes, and to solve relevant NP complete problems.

General aspects and definition of different classes of models
Introduction to discrete models
Differential biological models, and recurrence equations
Markov Chains
Formal Languages and Grammars for biological aggregation
Analysis of DNA behavior by PCR
Trees and membrane models
Graphs and biological networks
Petri Nets
Models and problems of Natural Computing
