Curriculum

Umberto Castellani works on the intersections between computer vision, computer graphics and machine learning:
  • 3D Acquisition from images and range sensors, structure and motion.
  • 3D Registration, multiple view registration, semantic segmentation of 3D objects,
  • Synthesis and modelling for rendering and animation of 3D objects,
  • Real time interaction and visualization, videogames, augmented reality, virtual reality,
  • 3D reconstruction of deformable 3D objects from images, morphable models, 
  • Analysis of 3D data, characterization of rigid and non-rigid shapes, spectral methods, diffusion geometry,
  • Data driven  analysis, deep learning on geometric objects, support vector machine and multiple kernel learning,
The research activities is developed within european projects and MIUR projects. He is working with companies of the game industry  (http://www.mastergamedev.it/), spin-off and other local companies. He is very active on biomedical research for the morphological characterization of pathologies in psychiatry.

Vision, Images, Patterns and Signals (VIPS)
VIPS activities are devoted to the analysis, recognition, modeling and prediction of multivariate multidimensional signals and patterns by artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques. Specific expertise and application domains include image processing, computer vision, pattern recognition, machine learning, human-machine interaction, computer graphics, mixed reality and gaming, analysis and modeling of biomedical and neuroscience data for both basic and translational research.

Shape modeling and anlaysis Shape modelling focuses on the 3D synthesis and simulation of the real world involving geometric, appearance and dynamic aspects (i.e., deforming objects). Shape analysis is based on the processing of 3D structures to infer a higher-level interpretation of the observed data using for examples shape matching or shape segmentation techniques. Recent advances in this field encompass deep learning methods on the 3D domain (i.e., geometric deep learning). Artificial Intelligence

Neuroimaging The main activity is in the field of neuroimaging, including structural (diffusion MRI) and functional (EEG, fNIRS, functional MRI) imaging as well as perceptual analysis through cognitive science methods. The goal is to gain an holistic view of human brain when inspected in specific conditions by the integration of multi-modal multi-scale probing and modeling. In addition, advanced computer vision and pattern recognition methods are employed for designing numerical biomarkers for the characterization of healthy and pathological conditions.
