Arrow's theorem, for which a Nobel prize was given, shows the impossibility of a transitive order when linear orders on more than two elements have to be aggregated (as in voting procedures). From the result has grown a whole field of mathematics. In this minicourse, we look at the most important results from a mathematical point of view, to locate the essential methods and problems in the area.
