Algorithms and tools for life sciences

Speaker:  Rosalba Giugno - Università di Catania
  Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 4:45 PM 16:45 rinfresco; 17:00 inizio seminario.

The talk will present our approach to some computational problems in the field of Life Sciences. We will start
talking about exact and approximate graph matching applied to chemioinfomatics/pharmacogenomics and
biological network analysis (motif research and network querying). We will continue with algorithms to
analyze RNA, from the back-translation paradigm to the study of small non coding RNAs (miRNAs) acting as
regulators of gene expression in physiological processes and pathologies. In this direction, we will explore
some techniques for target prediction, artificial miRNA design, biological data mining using miRNA, biological
network annotation, and the role of miRNAs in virus. The talk will conclude with microarray data analysis and
with several comments on the biological questions we have in agenda.
