FEM-based simulations in the medical field and applications to breast deformation

Biomedical simulations are computer-based simulations employed to model the behavior of anatomical structures when subject to known forces or displacements, and have applications in several fields, from rehabilitation to surgical training and guidance. Finite element modelling (FEM) has proved to be an effective technique for modelling and simulation of biomedical engineering problems based on the theories of continuum mechanics. This seminar will provide an overview of the field of biomedical simulations and the main aspects that have to be addressed for their effective use. As an example application, a FEM-based patient-specific biomechanical model of the breast that simulates breast deformations will be presented (related to the MURAB - MRI and Ultrasound Robotic Assisted Biopsy - project).
