Growth and Control of Brain Tumours

Cancerous tumours originate from the mutation of one or more cells which usually have a rapid and uncontrolled growth and consequently damage the functioning of normal tissue. There are many different cancers and each of them has his own characteristics. 

In this essay we would like to focus on brain tumours and in particular gliomas or glioblastomas, which make up about half of all primary brain tumours diagnosed; they are particularly nasty tumours with a depressingly dismal prognosis for recovery. 

In particular the aim of this project is to present the basic models for tumour cells growth and invasion in human brain in order to discuss some of the most important treatment techniques. 

We present the basic model to describe glioma cells invasion as a reaction-diffusion equation with appropriated boundary conditions, we describe in vitro experiments  since they can be useful to describe in vivo behaviour of tumour cells.  Then we start discussing different approaches in treating tumours, in particular resection and chemotherapy.
