The purpose of the course is to give the student a solid appreciation of the deep connections between mathematics and other scientific disciplines, both in terms of the mathematical problems that they inspire and the important role that mathematics plays in scientific research. Mathematical software tools, and others, will be used to implement algorithms for the solution of the problems studied during the course. At the end of the course it is expected that the student has the ability to construct and develop mathematical models for scientific problems and to analyze their limits and applicability.
The course will discuss the following topics:
* Advanced methods for the solution of differential equations (ODE and PDE) with applications to the biological and life sciences
To pass the exam the student must demonstrate the ability to mathematically model problems expressed in terms of other scientific disciplines, using, adapting and developing the models discussed in the lectures. To that end the student will be assigned one or more more projects that are to be presented orally.
