Lesson timetable

Learning outcomes

Understanding of the molecular mechanisms of various pathological states, with particular emphasis on genetic diseases. Correlate the alterations at molecular level with the pathological manifestations of the diseases at cell, tissue and patient level. Define the molecular basis of the available treatments as well as of the strategies to be developed.

-Molecular pathology of proteins: introduction and general concepts
-Hemoglobin molecular pathology
-Collagen molecular pathology
-Diseases linked to protein aggregation
-Disorders due to alterations of ABC transporters: cystic fibrosis
-Inherited metabolic diseases: disorders of the carbohydrate, lipids, amino acids and nucleotide metabolism.
-Mitochondrial diseases
-Lysosomal storage diseases
-Peroxisomal diseases
-Diseases linked to ER stress
-Innovative therapeutic approaches to the cure of protein deficits
-Mechanisms of action of bacterial toxis
-Disorders linked to the production of free radicals
