The SiME project (Sinica Mediaevalia Europaea. China in European sources of the Middles Ages (1200-1582):
census and study) has in aim to provide an exhaustive census of all medieval sources (written in Latin or in
the Romance languages) relating to China, that can be included in the period between 1200 and 1582.
The project will consider only texts containing reliable information (direct or secondary) concerning
China, such as the accounts of missionaries, travellers, and ambassadors, the letters and the chronicles.
Apocryphal works (such as imaginary journeys), will be excluded from the corpus. Works will be
described by following a standard scheme; this stage of the project is extremely important because it will
provide relevant information on manuscripts and manuscript traditions that have been very little studied.
The census will occupy the first twelve months of the SiME project. At the end of the process, the results
of the census will be made available to the scientific community by loading them on an open access
website devoted to the project.
The months from 12 to 24 will be devoted to research on the basis of the data provided by the census
and to produce a series of studies related to the project.
