I am an Associate Professor of Numerical Analysis and Principal Investigator of the ERC Starting Grant [ALcHyMiA](https://elenagaburro.it/ALcHyMiA.html) (grant agreement no. 101114995), a 5-year project (2024-2029) with a research budget of 1.500.000 euros, devoted to the development of novel and effective numerical methods for the solution of hyperbolic equations. My group currently includes 4 PhD students, 1 postdoctoral researcher, and 4 master's and bachelor's thesis students.
My research focuses on the development of new Finite Volume and Discontinuous Galerkin schemes of arbitrary high order, both in space and in time, for the solution of nonlinear hyperbolic systems on moving unstructured polygonal meshes. My research topics include also: path-conservative well balanced schemes for nonconservative hyperbolic equations, structure preserving schemes, direct Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian schemes, nonconforming sliding lines techniques, Voronoi regenerating meshes with topology change. Applications concern: shallow water and multiphase flows, Euler equations of gasdynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, general relativity and continuum mechanics.
I have a PhD in Mathematics and I have been a Post Doctoral researcher at the [University of Trento](https://www.dicam.unitn.it/) (Italy, 2017-2020) and a researcher (with a permanent faculty position) at the [Inria center of the University of Bordeaux](https://www.inria.fr/fr/centre-inria-universite-bordeaux/) (France, 2021-2024), before being appointed Associate Professor in April 2024. In 2024, I was awarded the Peter Lax Award given by the scientific committee of the HYP international conference as best researcher in the field in the category PhD+0 -- PhD+10.
I have been the Principal Investigator of my Marie Curie IF research project [SuPerMan](https://www.elenagaburro.it/SuPerMan.html), from 2021 to 2023. I also got a French Research Grant (ANR-JCJC ImPreVu) and a German DFG Research Grant.
I have been visiting researcher at LJLL (Sorbonne Université, France), at the University of Wurzburg (Germany) and in the EDANYA group (University of Malaga, Spain), part of the time as winner of a Marie Curie MSCA-ITN grant under the H2020 EU project [ModCompShock](http://modcompshock.eu/).
I serve as Associate Editor for [Computer & Fluids](https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/computers-and-fluids) (from 2025) and [Applied Mathematics and Computation](https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/applied-mathematics-and-computation/about/editorial-board) (from 2022), both Elsevier journals, and I am a member of the executive committee of the PhD program in Mathematics (Verona-Trento).
I speak Italian, English, French and Spanish.

| Topic | Description | Research area |
|---|---|---|
| Numerical solution of partial differential equations | Analysis and implementation of innovative and effective numerical methods for solving and controlling partial differential equations (PDEs) of parabolic type (diffusion-transport-reaction), hyperbolic type (e.g. Euler equations for gas dynamics and Einstein field equations for astrophysics), highly oscillatory (Schrödinger equations), and integro-differential equations (kinetic equations with term collision and mean-field equations with non-local interaction terms). |

Numerical analysis |
| Development of novel Finite Volumes and Galerkin Discontinuous numerical methods with Structure Preserving properties | Conception, analysis and HPC development of novel high-order accurate Finite Volumes (FV) and Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) numerical methods for the solution of hyperbolic equations. The equations of interest are: the Euler equations of gas-dynamics, Shallow Water equations for the field of fluid-dynamics, MHD and GRMHD for magnetohydrodynamics, Baer-Nunziato for multiphase, GPR for continuum mechanics and the Einstein field equations for general relativity. The methods developed are high-order accurate, structure preserving (i.e., preserving additional physical features as equilibria, involution constraints and asymptotic limits) and Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE). The algorithms are implemented on adaptive Cartesian grids and on grids of triangles/tetrahedra, polygons/polyhedra and Voronoi also moving in time (the mesh generation and optimization are also the subject of our research). |
