Sound and image processing (2010/2011)

Teaching is organised as follows:
Unit Credits Academic sector Period Academic staff
IMMAGINI 6 INF/01-INFORMATICS II semestre Gloria Menegaz
SUONI 6 INF/01-INFORMATICS I semestre Carlo Drioli

Learning outcomes

Module: SUONI
-------
Module: Sound
-------
The class gives the basic theoretical fundamentals and some methods for the generation and processing of sound.
Sound processing is important for designing multimedia systems. The auditory channel is always open and able to discriminate or integrate acoustic events. Vice versa, the visual system is suited for detecting and organizing spatial information. This gives importance to audio-visual communication in contemporary computer science.
After a short introduction to psycho-acoustics, the main techniques for analyzing, processing, and synthesizing sounds by computer are presented.
The course gives the tools and fundamental techniques for understanding and manipulating sounds for the purpose of creating interfaces, compressing and transmitting information, analyzing scenes, etc. .

Module: Laboratory of Sound
-------
An experimental complement of the theoretical lectures on sound generation and processing.

Module: IMAGE PROCESSING
-------

The course aims at providing the students with the basic tools that are required for image analysis and modeling with focus on bioinformatics. This will consist of the generalization of the main signal analysis methods to the 2D case, enriched with 2D specific tools. Among the main topics are the Fourier and Wavelet transforms, the multi-scale representation and analysis, color imaging, as well as techniques for image segmentation and classification.

Syllabus

Module: Sound
-------
* Elements of psychoacoustics and auditory perception
* Discretization of continuous-time signals and systems
* Transforms: Laplace, Fourier, Zeta

Assessment methods and criteria

Module: SUONI
-------
Module: Sound
-------
A written test for each module, where questions aim at verifying the understanding of theoretical concepts and the mastering of the mathematical and computer tools.
Students that are exceptionally motivated can develop a project and defend it, after negotiation with the teacher.

Module: Laboratory of Sound
-------
The Laboratory exam is not distinct from the exam of the base course.

Module: IMAGE PROCESSING
-------

Written test for both theory and lab.
