Learning outcomes

Module: Teoria
-------
The course aims at developing knowledge about the conservation laws applicable to the flow of fluids and about the relevant mathematical models, including turbulence. Significant applications will be provided in the field of potential flows, of newtonian and non-newtonian fluids in pressure motion, of compressible fluids and of free-surface flows. A few seminars will present specific research topics.

Module: Laboratorio
-------
Implementation of numerical codes in Matlab and/or GNU Octave for the numerical solution of problems in fluid dynamics.

Syllabus

Module: Teoria
-------
Static of fluids. The kinematics of fluid motion. Main conservation laws. Rheology and consitutive laws. Turbulence and diffusion. Some analytical solution for uniform laminar flows, including the case of Bingham fluids. Potential flows around aifoils. Finite difference and finite element model to solve laminar flow in simple geometric domain configurations. Hyperbolic models of PDE's and the general evolution of a Riemann Problem for shallow water and in gas dynamics.

Module: Laboratorio
-------
Numerical methods for potential flows.
Numerical solution of Blasius (boundary layer on a plat plate in a uniform flow) and Falkner-Skan (boundary layer on a plat plate in a non-uniform flow) equations.
Numerical methods for compressible flows.

Assessment methods and criteria

Module: Teoria
-------
The examination is oral. The laboratory work, supplemented by homework analysis and exercise, is followed by a tutor and contributes to the final rank.

Module: Laboratorio
-------
Oral examination in which the candidate presents the work performed during the lab and discusses one of the codes developed.
